I am using Sketchup pro 2016. I think I know how it should work so I made a surface hit the select host and get the message as in the supplied screenshot…hmm seems like i am not able to attach a screenshot. Anyway I get an exclamation mark saying to 'pick a group or component containing one or mutiple surface(s) What have I missed?

I’m new to it and I get the same…it seems a bit random but after I get the popup I can then generally successfully chose the item I want.
Just remember it has to be a group. It does seem a but clunky at first…especially on Mac.
Make sure that your surface is withing a group or a component.
Skatter cannot pick raw geometry (faces outside a group)
